Shawn Cunix came into the final table of the WPT Jacksonville Main Event with the chip lead and effectively used that advantage to capture the title worth $400,600, despite having to endure the pain from a broken collarbone . Along with the $375,100 cash prize, Cunix also will get a $25,500 entry into the WPT World Championship being held May 18-19th at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
Cunix managed to maintain his composure and focus while suffering from a broken collarbone he injured after an ATV accident where he heroically saved his son’s life. ”This has been one of the most humbling experiences of my life,” Cunix commented after the emotional win. “If you put passion into anything, you’re capable of the unbelievable.”
The $5,000 buy-in event attracted a field of 320 players and generated a prize pool worth $1.5 million. Poker pro’s Tony Dunst and Will Failla highlighted the final table but ended up 5th and 6th respectively. Strong performances were also seen by Matt Giannetti (22nd – $12,124) and Allen Kessler (34th – $9,610). James Dempsey would end up bubbling the event in 37th place.
